"Henry Morrison Flagler was an industrialist, oil magnate, land developer, and railroad pioneer. A co-founder of Standard Oil, he was the single most pivotal figure in Florida's development. His vision and enterprising spirit helped to create America's largest company and to raise cities out of a wilderness on Florida's east coast." Flagler's former Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, Florida, a grand resort built in 1888, is now the centerpiece of Flagler College. The spirit of Flagler lives on at the College that bears his name, an extension of what he believed about America and the abundant possibilities of the human spirit.
